The British military had a similar problem with the introduction of new helmets leading up into WWI. After the Helmets where used the number of soldiers with head injuries in hospitals skyrocketed. Some of the Brass argued for the removal of the Helmets until someone pointed out that whats increasing wasn't the number of head injuries but the numbers of head injury survivors. Examples like these really need to be taught early in statistic classes, because the math alone is useless if one does not know how to properly apply it.

This is inaccurate as usualy. Thanks . Abraham Wald WAS part of the research team. He WAS the one gathering data on the returning planes and while exchanging with colleagues he realised they have been focusing on returning planes only.

That's the problem with most research. Sampling error. A non representative set will give entirely different result. This is used by lawyers and marketing professionals to lie with statistics

One would think that basic reasoning would lead you to the conclusion that protecting the fucking motor which keeps the airplane operating and the cockpit which protects the pilot, are the main areas to armor.

The Russians had found another solution to the problem - instead of designing a "normal" aircraft frame then adding armor on the exterior, they designed the armor to be a load-bearing element of the aircraft, saving on the weight of (much of) the frame to allow thicker armor. The IL-2 that was designed that way was nicknamed "the concrete bomber" by the Germans, because of the amount of fire it could take. The concept is now long obsolete in aircraft, but all modern cars are designed this way (while earlier they were usually of the "body over chassis" design), to both save weight and allow better protection to the occupants in case of a collision or a rollover.

You don't generally armor a plane. You design it so that the plane still works even if most of it is missing or riddled with bullet holes. The only place where you'd typically find armor if at all is surrounding the crew.

Armour plating on planes are most often placed around the pilot and cooling systems. You want aircrafts to be as light as possible so plating anywhere else will be seen as uneccesary unless it's a bomber or a strike fighter plane. This applies to aircrafts around WW2 and some time after.
